SLIDING DOWN: Press Release

SLIDING DOWN: Press Release
The words, “sliding down,” are intended to symbolize a “moment of surrender” - the type that opens a passage through which images and ideas well up from the subconscious mind. On October 28, The R&R Gallery | Project will present Sliding Down - a music event featuring performances by an inspiring variety of East Side/Downtown artists, whose work reflects this type of surrender, pushes personal boundaries, and embodies what author and educator Robert Henri called "the art spirit". Together, the performances will result in a spectrum spanning and blurring the boundaries of music's purpose as a tool for catharsis, emoting, storytelling and entertainment; as well as a scientific, philosophical and even, humorous exploration of reality.

PERFORMERS

Eric Byers will be performing his own music for solo cello. Using live sampling, his cello becomes part of a multidimensional cello ensemble. Eric is the cellist of the LA-based Calder Quartet. soundcloud.com/ericbyers

Morgan Gee's set will explore love and more specifically the 'broken heart', beginning with a short lecture on neurophysiology and continuing with a performance containing noisy soundscapes, original love songs and a cover by the country icon of heartbreak, Tammy Wynette. Morgan will be joined by circuit-bender Andy Ben, bassist Masatoshi Sato, visual artists Carrie Schrek and Samuel Partal and costumes designed by Darija Varnas. morgangee.com

Songwriter and singer Jonelle Vette will use new songs to explore “the hero's journey” embarked upon by a character who rejected the "expected" life, in order to try to redefine herself. The result is a set of haunting lullaby's that trace her undulating slide away from former comforts into the unknown. vettemusic.com, facebook: vettemuse, blog, bandcamp

Sadie Siegel is a self-taught musician, trained as a visual artist and architect will be performing Column Studies, a set of sculptures that mute, hold and amplify audio, asking participants to consider sound as a physical quantity and to reflect upon the social space created by its performance. Siegel’s Karaoke Roulette will also be installed, welcoming guests to sing from a catalog of unknown songs created by plugging various articles about the political uncertainties of the Arab Spring into an online lyric generator. sadiesiegel.bandcamp, practicing-a-broken-ceiling
